Fulkerson Weighs in as National Executive Committee Member

At ABC National’s recent board meeting, Vance Fulkerson was elected to serve as ABC National’s representative to the entire Southeastern Region representing Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Fulkerson is a former Chapter Chairman of the Alabama chapter and currently the Operations Manager of Lithko Contracting.  Lithko is nationally known as one of the largest turnkey concrete contractors currently serving via 11 offices.  In 2015, Lithko will expand by adding three more offices in Denver, Omaha and is currently proceeding with opening an office in Birmingham.

“Representing the Southeast regionally nationally is an honor,” Fulkerson said.  “By far we are the largest region and I started my involvement in ABC with one of the largest chapters (Alabama). Having this large of a membership base and allowing me to represent them is humbling and hard work at the same time.  The Southeast region is red states through and through. We understand ambush elections, we understand free enterprise, and the companies I am elected to represent want that torch carried high and visible.  Much of what I do with ABC National is the very thing Robin Savage and the ABC of Alabama Board are working on. We must protect our rights but also ensure willingness to change with trends, technologies and curves we as an industry will always get thrown.”

Fulkerson did take time to brag on his home chapter’s right-to-work and recent project labor agreement (PLA) victory in the legislature. “ABC of Alabama has certainly taken the bull by the horns while a Republican super majority is in place,” he said. “Their legislative actions and work with Greg Canfield as Secretary of Commerce is setting the stage for Alabama contractors to reap economic benefits for years to come.  I am very proud of what my home chapter has become.”

While Alabama is enjoying many successes, Fulkerson now holds the reigns for an entire region.  “My focus to the national board for my region is centered around getting 100 percent engagement of ABC National strategic plan and getting our chapters and members aligned to that strategic plan,” he said.  “This is what the members of ABC have decided is most important and, as such, I want to make sure that everything we do from our budgets to our staff to our committees aligns with one of the areas within the plan.  We are all focused on membership again after the economic downturn to help grow our membership and increase our clout as an organization.  In addition, much of my time has been focused on workforce development as well as the health, safety and environmental portions of the plan, as well as working with our national PAC, business partnerships and young professionals.  My job is made much easier because of the great chapters that I have in my region, especially my home chapter here in Alabama.  Chapters that already align what they spend their time and effort on with the national strategic plan.  I look forward to continuing my leadership progression within ABC National as well as my local ties with ABC of Alabama.”

Fulkerson concluded by discussing Lithko’s office opening in Birmingham and his being back in Alabama full time. “Not all states enjoy the strong construction base like Alabama,” he said. “There is so much to be said for the knowledge, passion and drive all those contractors bring to our local ABC chapter. I miss that solid local involvement.  It makes me and my company better.”
