Thompson Tractor Co. President Named Cornerstone Award Winner

Michael D. Thompson, president and chief executive officer at Thompson Tractor Co., Inc., has been named ABC of Alabama’s 2015 Cornerstone Award winner. The Cornerstone Award is presented annually to an individual who has made an exemplary lifelong commitment to Alabama Construction and has brought favorable recognition to the industry as a result of his or her personal integrity, business ethics and community involvement.

“Every year, our association pauses to honor one cornerstone of Alabama’s construction community,” said ABC of Alabama President Jay Reed. “Without a doubt, Mike’s commitment to workforce training, safety and community advocacy makes him this year’s obvious choice. For 18 years now, Mike has remained at the top of my list of go-to people when our industry has a need. Even though he would never admit it, our entire state will benefit from the northern beltline because of one man. That man is Mike Thompson. I actually could describe Mike in the same way I describe our association’s mission: he solely exists to spur economic development and create jobs and a sustainable workforce. Our board and membership congratulate Mike and look forward to honoring him at our annual awards banquet.”

Jim Gorrie, president and CEO of Brasfield & Gorrie and last year’s Cornerstone Award recipient, added, “Mike Thompson is an outstanding business and community leader. Thompson Tractor has an exceptional reputation for delivering quality products and services to a broad range of customers. Mike is very involved in the day-to-day operations of the business and leads his team very effectively.

“Brasfield & Gorrie has always considered Thompson Tractor a key strategic partner, and we are always looking for ways to work together on infrastructure and power projects. Mike is also very committed to making the Birmingham area a better place. If there is an important project that needs help in the Birmingham area, you can usually find Mike Thompson very close by.”

In addition to serving as president and CEO at Thompson Tractor Co., Thompson is president and CEO of Fairway Investments, L.L.C., and Thompson Investments, L.L.C. He is also chairman and CEO of Tiger Machinery L.L.C., the Caterpillar dealer for five regions in Russia Far East. Thompson received his degree in general business from the University of Alabama and is serving on boards for and affiliated with numerous organizations, including the Birmingham Business Alliance, Civic Club Foundation, McWane Inc., Monday Morning Quarterback Club, Salvation Army and the University of Alabama President’s Council.

“I consider being named the Cornerstone Award winner an extremely high honor, and I am humbled,” Thompson said. “My firm has been proud to be a supplier to this great industry since 1957. We will continue to work for and promote this great alliance of businesses.”

Thompson will receive the award at the annual Excellence in Construction banquet on October 15.
