A Q&A With Joe Moon

Profile

Joe Moon of Moon Construction Services sat down with Alabama Construction News for a q&a session:

Q: When was Moon Construction Services formed?

A: Moon Construction Services was formed in 2004.

Q: What was the largest contract awarded?

A: Largest contract awarded to date is $2.4 million.

Q: What do you think is the answer to workforce development concerns in Alabama?

A: I think the answer to workforce development begins in middle schools and is a long term process of education through high school and college. Moon Construction has invested money and time to work with Huntsville City Schools to start programs in the schools that hopefully will show the children and their parents the wonderful and high paying careers that the construction community has to offer.
Q: Are you a coffee, Mtn. Dew or Coke guy?

A: I am a Diet Coke addict.
Q: Last book you read?

A: Decision Points by George W. Bush.
Q: What did you think you would do for a career when you graduated?

A: I thought I would be building houses.

Q: Biggest change in our industry since you started the company?

A: The biggest changes, not only since starting my company but over my 35 years in the industry, have been information and computer technology. When I started, estimates were still done with pencil and paper with sub bids taken over the telephone. We thought the fax machine with its thermal paper and analog cell phones were the greatest things that could ever come along.
Q: If you were in charge of dinner what are you cooking?

A: Steak and potatoes.
Q: To me, ABC means…?

A: I have joined many associations for some business related reason that either saved me money or had a specific relationship opportunity that I thought might be a strategic business move. I joined ABC because of its philosophy. The battles they have fought and won for merit shop beliefs is an inspiration. I joined and am active in ABC because, at the end of the day, I want to have done my part for the industry that has done so much for me. I am proud ABC will have me as a partner in this effort.
