Auburn’s CADC Team Participates in Annual Construction Competition

Building Alabama

During the fall semester, a team from Auburn University’s College of Architecture Design and Construction participated in the 2017 ABC Student Chapter Construction Management Competition in Orlando, Florida.

ABC’s Construction Management Competition (CMC) is the hallmark competition that promotes careers in construction management. The competition is sponsored in part by the Trimmer Construction Education Foundation (TCEF) and ABC members. In addition to providing a significant learning opportunity, the competition fosters an environment that will bring out the best in each team, encourage dialogue among the students and foster the team spirit as students rise to meet this challenge. The CMC is designed to challenge construction knowledge, time management, organizational and presentation skills. The competition features teams of college and university students testing their project management, estimating, safety, quality control and presentation skills.

The teams get the information for the competition about three weeks before the actual competition in order to have time to put together a proposal that includes an estimate, schedule, project management plan, safety plan and site utilization plan, and then it’s submitted a few days before the competition is to begin. Then once the competition begins, teams are given changes they must incorporate into their proposal and are given time to make needed changes. The changes can be anything from value engineering items to the project having a significant fire during the construction period. From that, the top teams are selected by judges and they then give oral presentations.

To help the Auburn team best prepare, ABC of Alabama has long been hands-on to help, both financially and educationally. “Over the years, ABC of Alabama has hosted golf tournaments an clay shoots to support us financially, but more than the financial support, they are always willing to review and critique our student proposals,” said J. Mark Taylor, the ABC student chapter faculty advisor at Auburn University. “ABC of Alabama always offers to do that for us, and that’s a huge advantage for our students to get real feedback from some of the best in the industry.”

This year in the competition, Auburn University’s team received a third place award in Quality Control.

Beyond the competition this year, the Auburn team was able to network while at the competition, something ABC of Alabama also helps facilitate, noted Taylor. “[ABC of Alabama President] Jay Reed always invites the team to have dinner with a group of industry supporters while at the competition. It’s a very nice gesture and a great opportunity for the students to meet industry professionals.”
